About the word counter

Word counts as a writing constraint

Almost every piece of writing has a target length: a 500-word column, a 2,000-word essay, a 160-character meta description. Those limits are not arbitrary — they encode how much attention the reader is expected to give.

The useful trick is to watch the count while editing rather than at the end. Writing long and then cutting produces tighter prose than trying to hit the number on the first pass, because cutting forces you to decide what actually earns its place.

Reading keyword density sensibly

The density table shows which words appear most often. It is a diagnostic for repetition, not an SEO target. Search engines stopped rewarding a specific keyword percentage a long time ago, and writing to hit one produces text that reads badly to humans and scores poorly with algorithms trained on natural language.

What the table is genuinely good for is catching tics — the word you have used nine times in four paragraphs without noticing.

How is a word defined?
A word is any run of characters separated by whitespace. Hyphenated compounds such as 'well-known' count as one word, and numerals count as words. This matches the behaviour of most word processors, so the figure should agree with what your document tells you.
How is reading time calculated?
At 200 words per minute, the typical silent reading speed for adults on general prose. Speaking time uses 130 words per minute, which is a comfortable presentation pace. Dense technical material reads slower; light fiction reads faster.
What counts as a sentence?
Text is split on full stops, question marks and exclamation marks followed by whitespace. Abbreviations such as 'Dr.' or 'e.g.' can inflate the count slightly — the figure is a good guide rather than a grammatical parse.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. All counting happens in your browser. The page makes no network request with your content, and closing the tab discards it.
